The Hawaiian Petrol is perched on the precipice of extinction. The ʻuaʻu, Hawaiʻi’s native petrel, clings to survival in the volcanic embrace of Mauna Loa. Only 50-60 breeding pairs remain, their nests nestled within the lower alpine and subalpine slopes of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, a fragile hope flickering in the face of dwindling numbers.
