M10 Hina of Hilo by Hawaiʻi Artist Dietrich Varez
One time the goddess Hina was captured by a moʻo (giant lizard) in the Wailuku river near Hilo. Her son Maui heard her cries for help and rescued his mother by heating the water and clubbing the moʻo as he surfaced to breathe. To this day, a long black rock formation remains as the dead body of the giant lizard.
