A kupunahine (elderly woman) dips her two fingers into her bowl of poi. ʻUlu (breadfruit), maiʻa (banana), iʻa (fish) and poi (cooked taro corms, pounded and thinned with water) are nutritionally important food staples which have played important roles in the cultural and spiritual life of ancient Hawaiians.
